History behind the book

In the novel "The book of Negroes" by Lawerence Hill, there are many settings in the story, but most importantly it starts off in Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone is a country in West Africa, and is the home to 6.4 million people. In 1787, when this book was written a plan was purposed to the poor people of London to settle in Sierra Leone which was called the "Province of Freedom". A number of people arrived in 1787, looking for change. In 1787, a plan was made to settle some of London's "Black Poor" in Sierra Lerone in what was called the "Province of Freedome". Many "Black Poor" arrived off the coast of Sierra Leone accompanied by some English trademen. Thousands of formely enslaved Africans were returned and liberated in Sierra Leone. These Africans whom returned were from many areas of Africa.
